Joe Manganiello (49) has publicly revealed serious health problems. The actor suffered from life-threatening consequences of multiple autoimmune diseases - in the end, he even had to have an organ removed.
In an announcement about his memoir "Bloodlines", set to be released in October, the 49-year-old reports that he struggled with "a whole series of autoimmune diseases" that affected his thyroid, his digestive system, his skin, his lungs, and his eyes.
For seven years, Manganiello fought the diseases. During this time, he suffered from chronic pain, underwent what he describes as a life-saving organ removal, and fell into an existential crisis. It was a prolonged battle for survival. The actor did not initially reveal which organ had to be removed. The doctors also had hardly any answers and no clear explanation, according to Manganiello.
"Most brutal and difficult time of my life"
When the doctors couldn't explain what was happening to him, he apparently also turned to unorthodox forms of treatment. "It was the most brutal and difficult time of my life, one I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy, but also my greatest adventure", Manganiello explained in "People" magazine.
"I hope that what I went through on this journey can give readers hope that answers and healing lie on the other side of whatever they're currently struggling with", he added. "The process of writing this book gave me a new perspective that helped me realize that my suffering was a cocoon from which I would emerge forever changed."
Exactly when the actor, who became famous through the series "True Blood" and the "Magic Mike" films, struggled with the diseases is not known. Joe Manganiello was married to his fellow actress Sofía Vergara (53) from 2015 to 2024. Last year, he proposed to his partner Caitlin O'Connor (36).
