With a photo from the woods, Daniel Funke (44) and Jens Spahn (46) publicly announced their family happiness. The Instagram image shows Funke, the CDU politician, and a baby stroller. Funke wrote: "We Are Family" and posted a red heart.
As "Bild" reports, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader and his husband have become parents of a son. The boy is named Georg and was born in the United States by a surrogate mother.
Spahn has already spoken about his new phase of life as a father. "My husband has become a papa, and I with him. Georg is our complete happiness. This feeling can hardly be put into words", "Bild" quotes him. According to sources close to the family, Daniel Funke is said to be the boy's genetic father. Regarding surrogacy, the couple responded to a "Bild" inquiry with the words: "We are aware that there is often uncertainty about surrogacy and that some prejudices exist. But as the great Franz Beckenbauer said: 'God rejoices over every child.'"
"Overjoyed and head over heels in love"
The couple is said to have already informed friends and companions about the birth of their child with a personal message. It reads: "We are overjoyed and head over heels in love with the little man and look forward to you meeting him soon. Full of joy for a life together as three, the proud papas."
The surrogate mother is said to remain part of the extended family circle in the future. The couple's message states: "She is now practically part of the family and will accompany Georg on his life's journey." The child's name also holds special significance: Georg was the first name of Jens Spahn's father, who passed away in 2024.
Until early August, the new parents plan to spend time in the United States with their son before returning to Germany.
Jens Spahn and Daniel Funke have been married since 2017 and live in Berlin as well as in Münsterland.
