Jennifer Aniston (57) may not be part of the planned streaming series "I'm Glad My Mom Died" after all. According to reports from the US outlet "TMZ", the actress allegedly canceled her involvement due to scheduling conflicts. However, this doesn't change anything about the project itself: The series is said to still be in development at Apple TV. Work on the scripts is currently ongoing. No replacement has been found yet for the lead role originally intended for Aniston.
The "Friends" actress was supposed to portray the role of the mother. The series is based on the memoir of the same name by actress Jennette McCurdy (34), which was published in 2022 and attracted major international attention. In the book, the former child star describes her strained relationship with her mother with a mix of dark humor and unflinching honesty. The work remained on the "New York Times" bestseller list for more than a year.
Director Also Left the Series
Even before Aniston's exit, the project had already experienced another prominent departure. Oscar-nominated director Jason Reitman (48) reportedly left the series due to creative differences with Jennette McCurdy. According to industry outlet "Puck", tensions arose because Reitman wanted to make the adaptation more comedic. McCurdy, who serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside Ari Katcher, opposed this direction.
Aniston Praised McCurdy Before Her Exit
Aniston's possible exit from the series "I'm Glad My Mom Died" comes as a surprise. The actress had previously expressed public enthusiasm about the project. In an interview with "People" magazine, she emphasized the personal parallels to Jennette McCurdy: "We had very similar mothers." Aniston described how she reacted to the offer: "When the opportunity to play this role and work with Jennette came across my desk as an option, I was immediately fascinated, flattered, and excited."
She praised the memoir as "so beautifully written". Aniston was particularly impressed by McCurdy's personal development: "The fact that she is the young woman she is after having lived this life is simply remarkable."
