On Thursday, the FIFA World Cup was ceremonially opened in Mexico City. Part of the ceremony also included Mexico-born actress Salma Hayek (59). She is one of this year's World Cup ambassadors and delivered a welcoming speech. She was impossible to miss on the field: for her appearance, she chose a bright red Gucci suit and a blouse with a floral pattern, to which a red and green striped bow was attached. On the collar of the blazer, a silver arrow-shaped brooch was attached, which according to media reports is from Boucheron.

In her address, Hayek announced the flag parade of the 48 participating nations. "In this stadium, together with Canada and the United States, we welcome the 48 flags. We Mexicans feel very honored to be here, where the World Cup begins," she said. Together with FIFA President Gianni Infantino (56), she presented the trophy.

Music Stars at the Opening Ceremonies

The opening ceremony on Thursday was characterized by Mexican culture, music, and dance. Among the musical highlights was the performance by Shakira and Burna Boy. The duo performed the official World Cup song "Dai Dai". Andrea Bocelli, Ejae, and David Guetta, who was connected via video, presented "DNA", the official anthem of the tournament - though without collaboration partner Megan Thee Stallion. Colombian singer J Balvin also took the field.

It was only the first of three opening ceremonies. On June 12, a ceremony will take place in Toronto for Canada's opening match. Acts announced include Michael Bublé and Alessia Cara, among others. Canadian actor Will Arnett will be there as a World Cup ambassador. In the USA, it also starts on Friday. Katy Perry, Future, and Tyla will perform in Los Angeles.
