Mike Myers (63) is bringing back his British secret agent: The Canadian actor and comedian has confirmed that a fourth Austin Powers film is in the works. On the show Trevor Noah's World Cup Watch Party, he was asked whether another installment of the film series would be coming. His answer was remarkably brief: "Yes." This hopefully marks the end of a years-long drought for fans of the spy parodies, as the release of the most recent installment was around 24 years ago.
Dr. Evil Returns in Commercial
The timing couldn't have been better: Just this week, Myers revived his arguably most famous villain. In a new commercial for mobile carrier Verizon, he once again slipped into the role of the bald-headed supervillain Dr. Evil. Several familiar faces returned alongside him: Seth Green (52), Mindy Sterling (72), and Rob Lowe (62) also reprised their old characters.
The film series began in 1997 with Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. Myers wrote the screenplay himself and took on a dual role as the groovy secret agent and his archenemy Dr. Evil. Jay Roach (69) sat in the director's chair. The launch was only moderately successful, with the film earning around 67 million dollars worldwide.
Two years later came the big breakthrough with Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me. For the sequel, Myers created another character, the corpulent Scottish henchman Fat Bastard. At the box office, the second installment became a smash hit, taking in more than 300 million dollars worldwide.
Comeback After Long Break
In 2002, Austin Powers in Goldmember built on this success and introduced yet another Myers character with the gold-obsessed Dutch supervillain Goldmember. It remained the most recent film in the series to date.
Myers had previously hinted that he wasn't ruling out a return. Back in 2019, he had indicated to Entertainment Weekly that they were hoping for an implementation and working to make the project a reality. Details about the fourth installment beyond the vague "Yes" are not yet available. It's also unknown when the film might be released.
