The long-awaited project "Heat 2" is finally taking concrete shape: As "The Wrap" reports, the sequel to the legendary 1995 crime classic has now officially gone into production - with a star-studded cast. According to reports, Leonardo DiCaprio (51) has now officially signed on after roughly a year of negotiations and will appear in the film alongside Christian Bale (52).

New Cast for Legendary Roles

The sequel is based on the novel of the same name by director Michael Mann from 2022, who had already written and directed the original "Heat". In the new film, Christian Bale takes on the role of LAPD detective Vincent Hanna, who was played by Al Pacino (86) in the original. Leonardo DiCaprio, in turn, slips into the role of career criminal Chris Shiherlis, who was portrayed by Val Kilmer (1959-2025) in 1995.

This once again brings together a star ensemble that, in its constellation, is reminiscent of the original, which made film history with Al Pacino, Robert De Niro (82) and Val Kilmer.

Other big names are also being considered for the project: Adam Driver (42) is reportedly in negotiations to take on the role of the particularly brutal antagonist Otis Wardell. Stephen Graham (52) is being discussed as the new Neil McCauley (originally played by De Niro), according to the report. An actress is currently still being sought for the role of Ashley Judd's character Sharlene.

Plot Across Multiple Time Periods

"Heat 2" is conceived as an epic crime drama and will take place across multiple time periods. The film serves simultaneously as both a prequel and sequel: One storyline shows the young Neil McCauley and his crew during spectacular heists and their life underground. A second level follows Chris Shiherlis after the events of the first film and his attempt to leave his past behind and find his lost love.

Additional parts of the story lead to a lawless territory controlled by illicit substances in South America, while a new, particularly brutal adversary connects the various storylines.

Return of Michael Mann

Director Michael Mann (83) returns for "Heat 2" and once again takes on directing and screenplay duties. The project originally emerged from his collaborative novel with Meg Gardiner, which was published in 2022 and serves as the basis for the film.

The sequel is being produced under the banner of Amazon MGM Studios. According to current plans, filming is scheduled to begin in November.
