On July 17, Netflix will release "Heartstopper Forever" - marking the end of a British coming-of-age series that has built up a loyal fan base since its first season in 2022. Instead of a fourth season, series creator Alice Oseman has opted for a concluding film: a feature-length movie that brings Nick Nelson (Kit Connor, 22) and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke, 22) together one last time.
Main cast returns almost completely
Almost the entire main cast is on board: Yasmin Finney as Elle Argent, Will Gao as Tao Xu, Corinna Brown and Kizzy Edgell as Tara and Darcy, Tobie Donovan as Isaac Henderson, as well as Rhea Norwood, Jenny Walser, Leila Khan, and Darragh Hand in their respective roles. The teacher characters Fisayo Akinade (Mr. Ajayi) and Nima Taleghani (Mr. Farouk) are also back. Anna Maxwell Martin and Derek Jacobi join the ensemble as new additions.
One actress is missing: Olivia Colman, who portrayed Nick's mother in the series, was reportedly unavailable according to "Tudum". Her role as Sarah Nelson is now being taken over by Anna Maxwell Martin. Derek Jacobi appears in a cameo role.
Particularly notable: Kit Connor and Joe Locke are serving as Executive Producers on "Heartstopper Forever" for the first time. For Connor, this is a personal matter: "These characters have meant a lot to us over the years. Being EPs feels like we can really say goodbye to them in the right way. It's bittersweet, but also a really beautiful way to end it", he told Netflix's "Tudum". Locke simply added: "This series has meant so much in my life. I will always carry this with me."
End of the third season
The finale of the third "Heartstopper" season focuses entirely on Charlie's development. After increasingly processing his mental health issues and gaining more self-confidence throughout the season, he confidently performs with his band. Nick manages to arrive in time for the performance despite delays.
Afterwards, the two share an intimate moment together, one they consciously took their time with and only experienced when they felt emotionally ready. Series creator Alice Oseman describes the ending as a positive conclusion to Charlie's personal journey, one that primarily emphasizes hope and the matured relationship between the two. The upcoming challenge of a possible long-distance relationship is already hinted at, as Nick faces the decision about his university choice.
Friendships under pressure
According to "Tudum", the film picks up immediately after the end of the third season. Nick is about to start university, which puts his relationship with Charlie to a new test. While Nick, according to Oseman, struggles to define his identity without Charlie, Charlie for his part is afraid of being left behind. "They still have some work to do - both on their relationship and on themselves", says the series creator.
Besides the central couple, the supporting characters also face crossroads: friendships are put to the test, life plans diverge in different directions. Oseman, who completed the sixth and final volume of her graphic novel series of the same name parallel to the series production, on which the film is based, emphasized to "Tudum": "It's not just the relationships that are being pulled in different directions, but also the friendships."
