Sir Rod Stewart (81) had to cancel a planned concert in the state of California just a few hours before the start due to health reasons. The 81-year-old British superstar was scheduled to perform on Friday evening (June 12) at the North Island Credit Union Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, but withdrew from the appearance at short notice.
According to the official statement, the reason for the cancellation was an acute upper respiratory infection that had led to laryngitis (inflammation of the larynx). On medical advice, it had been impossible for him to perform that evening. "Rod Stewart has very regrettably had to cancel his concert tonight in Chula Vista," it said in his Instagram story. Although he had already traveled to the venue and tried everything to make the performance possible, his voice had not cooperated.
The musician himself spoke up shortly afterwards from the nearly empty stadium and appeared visibly disappointed. "I'm here in beautiful Chula Vista while the stage is already being taken down," he wrote. While he was feeling "much better" after treatment, his voice was still strained. He expressly apologized to the fans and announced that he would reschedule the show if possible.
Farewell to the Live Stage?
Rod Stewart is currently on the US leg of his "One Last Time" tour, which has been running since 2024 and is widely interpreted as a kind of farewell to the big live stage. The next scheduled performance is set for June 15 in Colorado. As early as May, Stewart had to cancel two shows in Las Vegas on medical advice - also due to health problems related to a sinus infection.
However, his condition appears to have improved in the meantime: On Saturday, he posted a video from a private jet - together with his sons Alastair (20) and Liam (31). In the video, the family is on their way to Boston, where the World Cup match between Scotland and Haiti took place that evening. "No Scotland, no party," the three sing together. Stewart also jokes: "If Scotland makes it to the next round, I can pass away in peace." The match in the night to Sunday ended with a 1-0 victory for Scotland.
