Harvey Weinstein is in the hospital. The once-powerful Hollywood producer has contracted "severe respiratory problems" according to a spokesperson speaking to the industry portal "Deadline", and is currently receiving inpatient treatment. His condition deteriorated over the past week; now the 74-year-old is resting and recovering in the clinic, where according to the spokesperson's account he will remain for at least the coming weeks.
The US portal "TMZ" first reported on the deterioration. According to their report, Weinstein suffered cardiac arrest behind bars, triggered by pneumonia.
Cardiac Arrest on Rikers Island
According to information from "TMZ", Weinstein had been in the jail complex on Rikers Island in New York for about two weeks when he suffered the incident. Because he could barely breathe anymore, authorities immediately transferred him to the prison ward of Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan. According to the report, he has been treated there ever since.
Doctors inserted an IV, connected him to a heart monitor, and administered antibiotics for the pneumonia, writes "TMZ" citing sources with direct knowledge. Weinstein is doing better now, but he's not out of the woods yet.
Incarceration Until Sentencing in September
Weinstein is being held on Rikers Island while awaiting the sentencing scheduled for September. This is based on a 2025 conviction for inappropriate contact. In recent years, the producer has already had several health incidents.
As "Deadline" reports, New York prosecutors recently declined to pursue charges against the 74-year-old for a fourth time. The case had previously been tried three times - once ending in a conviction that was later overturned, twice the juries remained deadlocked.
These Verdicts Remain in Effect
Weinstein's other convictions remain in place, including another inappropriate contact offense in New York as well as verdicts in California. In 2020, the film producer, who became a symbolic figure of the #MeToo movement, was found guilty in New York of these offenses and sentenced to 23 years in prison.
In 2022, a conviction in Los Angeles for similar offenses followed, resulting in 16 years in prison. His New York conviction was overturned in 2024, but in a retrial Weinstein was once again convicted of inappropriate contact in 2025.
