For decades, she was one of the most dazzling personalities in German cinema. With her striking eyes, her elegance, and her extraordinary screen presence, Gudrun Landgrebe (75) left her mark on generations of moviegoers and television viewers. Now the actress is saying a final goodbye to her profession.
In an interview with "Bild am Sonntag", Landgrebe announced the end of her film career. The 75-year-old is thus deliberately drawing a line under a professional life that was characterized by major roles, renowned directors, and numerous successes.
"I have closed that chapter, and I'm content with that", the actress said. Landgrebe makes it clear that her retirement has nothing to do with disappointment or resignation. On the contrary: the actress appears satisfied and at peace with her life's journey. "I had a great deal of joy in my profession. It was my great passion", she reflects.
Private life instead of acting career
"You have to stop at the right time", she explains. And that time is apparently now: in just a few days, the actress will celebrate her 76th birthday. Her daily life now takes place far from film sets, premieres, and red carpets.
Instead, Landgrebe is enjoying the things for which there was often little time during her career: meeting friends, doing sports, attending cultural events. "I do a lot, visit friends, do sports, constantly go to concerts, to the ballet, and to the movies", she says. There's only one thing she doesn't miss at all, according to her: all the traveling for work.
There's hardly any trace of melancholy in Gudrun Landgrebe. Rather, she seems to be enjoying the peace and freedom of this new phase of her life. "I have good thoughts", she says.
Breakthrough with "Die flambierte Frau"
Gudrun Landgrebe achieved her breakthrough in the early 1980s with the film "Die flambierte Frau". In the drama, she portrayed a woman breaking free from the constraints of her previous life. The role made her famous overnight and brought her international attention. The film was even submitted as the German entry for the Academy Awards at the time.
Numerous other successes followed. Particularly unforgettable is her portrayal of Klärchen in the television series "Heimat - Eine deutsche Chronik" by director Edgar Reitz. The production is still considered a milestone in German television history today.
Landgrebe also worked internationally with renowned filmmakers. Among others, she performed for Hungarian director István Szabó and acted alongside Klaus Maria Brandauer.
