Friedrich Merz (70) gave Donald Trump a slightly belated 80th birthday gift at the G7 summit in France. The German Chancellor presented the U.S. President with a jersey of the German national team, referencing the 2026 World Cup currently taking place in Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

The jersey that the Chancellor gifted to the U.S. head of government bears the player name "Trump" and the number "47" on the back. Donald Trump is the 45th and 47th President of the United States of America. He celebrated his 80th birthday on June 14.

The Chancellor documented the handover on social media. Among other places on Instagram, Merz's official Chancellor account published two pictures of it. "Belated happy 80th birthday", it says. And: "After all, we belong to the same team." The comments include both critical and favorable reactions.
