The award is based on an impressive streak: The track has been at the top of the Official German Singles Charts for five weeks without interruption, according to GfK with a clear lead over its competitors.
'Dai Dai' was released in mid-May 2026 as the official song for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In Germany alone, the song has been streamed almost 60 million times so far. The Colombian singer and the Nigerian singer are also leading the Official German Airplay Charts.
Success even after the tournament
It's by no means a given that a tournament song outlasts the end of the competition. In this case, demand remained strong, as GfK Entertainment reports.
The success is not limited to Germany. The track climbed to the top of the charts in numerous other countries, currently including Austria in the Ö3 Austria Top 40 and Switzerland in the Official Swiss Hitparade.
Afrobeats, reggaeton and a dance routine to imitate
Musically, the title mixes Afrobeats, dance-pop and reggaeton. Add to that a dance choreography that has found countless imitators on social networks, as well as lyrics that can be sung along to without much effort. With this, the song fulfills the essential criteria of a summer hit, according to the announcement.
Songs characterized by Afro-sounds currently dominate a good portion of the Top 100 anyway. Besides 'Dai Dai', there are tracks like 'Jamaican (Bam Bam)' by Hugel and Solto, 'Mi Chico' by DJ Goja, and the perennial 'Show Me Love' by WizTheMc x bees & honey.
'Companion of an entire summer'
'With "Dai Dai," Shakira and Burna Boy have shaped the 2026 music summer like hardly any other act,' Mathias Giloth, Managing Director of GfK Entertainment, is quoted as saying in the announcement. As the official World Cup song, the title combined enthusiasm for the tournament with a presence that now reaches far beyond football. Through streaming, radio and social media, the song has become a 'companion of an entire summer.'
The record company's assessment is similar. Fiete Klatt, Senior Vice President of RCA Label Group / Sony Music GSA, speaks of an 'extraordinary success' and interprets it as proof 'of how relevant Latin music has now become in the German-speaking market and how dynamically the fan community is growing.'
With this award, Shakira and Burna Boy join a summer hit list that was most recently led by 'Golden' from the film KPop Demon Hunters and by Shirin David's 'Bauch Beine Po'. In 2023, it was the song 'Mädchen auf dem Pferd'. Before 'Layla' (2022), Ed Sheeran (35) delivered the summer hit with 'Bad Habits'.
