Great Britain mourns one of its actresses particularly known for her comedic talent. As British media report, Penelope Keith (1940-2026) has passed away at the age of 86 after battling cancer.
"It is with deep regret that we announce that Dame Penelope Keith, while living with cancer, passed away peacefully at her home in Surrey, where she had lived for over 50 years", the relatives of the deceased share according to the BBC. The family is grateful for the care and support that Keith received during her treatments and asks for privacy during this difficult time.
Penelope Keith was not just a sitcom actress
Penelope Keith was a familiar face on British television, at the theater, and had already been in front of TV cameras in the early 1960s. She was known among other things for the role of Margo Leadbetter in the 1970s sitcom "The Good Life", for which she was also honored with the BAFTA Award. She also received a BAFTA Award for "The Norman Conquests". In later years, she could also be seen as a host of various TV formats.
In addition, Keith was president of the Actors' Benevolent Fund between 1989 and 2022, a charitable organization dedicated to the welfare of actresses, actors, and other people from the industry. In 2014, she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her charitable and artistic achievements. She told the British "Daily Mail" in a 2007 interview: "Humor is power and a positive force, because if you can laugh, especially at yourself, you are to some extent able to understand things."
