Wakanda is getting a new Black Panther. Director Ryan Coogler (40) announced at San Diego Comic-Con that a third "Black Panther" film is officially in the works. A new actor will step into the title role.
David Jonsson (32), known from "The Long Walk" and "Alien: Romulus", will play T'Challa, the son of the character portrayed by the late Chadwick Boseman (1976-2020). "Black Panther 3" is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2028.
During the announcement at the Marvel panel at Comic-Con, Jonsson stated according to "Entertainment Weekly": "I want to say thank you so much." He addressed Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige (53) directly. The actor added: "Thank you to this incredible family that I cherish so much - it's a privilege and a blessing to be a part of it."
Denzel Washington is also on board
Reports about a new "Black Panther" film have been circulating for quite some time. Back in 2024, Denzel Washington (71) revealed in an interview that Coogler was writing a role for him in the next "Black Panther". He later apologized directly to the director for letting the cat out of the bag: "I called him. I said, 'I'm sorry, man'." However, the filmmaker wasn't upset with him. In 2025, Coogler himself confirmed that Washington will have a role in the upcoming film.
The first "Black Panther" film was released in theaters in 2018, with Boseman in the title role as T'Challa, the king of the fictional nation of Wakanda. The actor died on August 28, 2020, at the age of 43 from complications of colon cancer, which he had kept private for years.
Letitia Wright (32), who played his sister Shuri, stepped into his "Black Panther" footsteps in 2022's "Wakanda Forever". The film ended with the revelation that Boseman's T'Challa had a young son with Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o).
