Lamine Yamal (18) is now a so-called Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. The United Nations Children's Fund announced this on International Day of Play on June 11, which is also the day of the opening of the 2026 World Cup. The Spanish national team player emphasizes in a press release how important it is for children's development to be able to play.
Playing Soccer Gave Lamine Yamal Structure
"I am incredibly proud to become a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador", Lamine Yamal is quoted as saying in the statement. "When I was growing up, I only had my family, a ball, a park, and a dream", explains the soccer star, who will also be playing for his country at the World Cup.
Playing soccer gave Yamal "structure, a sense of belonging, and hope for the future". He knows how important it is for children to have a safe place where they can play and simply be kids. However, millions of children around the world don't have such a place. "When children are denied the opportunity to play, they lose chances to develop skills, make friends, and imagine a better future", the star says.
In his new role as ambassador, the professional soccer player will therefore increasingly advocate for children's right to play and for the support of young people living in humanitarian emergencies, UNICEF announces. According to a new report by the children's aid organization, more than 80 million children worldwide between the ages of two and four are unable to play with caregivers such as a parent. More than 90 million children under five have no toys or play opportunities at home.
