Following the death of actor Sam Neill (1948-2026), his family has now provided clarity about the cause of death. As his long-time spokesperson Philip Grenz told media outlets, the 78-year-old died of pneumonia. The information was released in consultation with Neill's relatives after "inaccuracies and simply false claims" about his death had been circulating in recent days.
The star of films like "Jurassic Park" had been declared free of illness just three months ago after a long battle against the disease. In 2022, he was diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma - a rare form of blood condition. After several chemotherapy treatments, a modern CAR-T cell therapy finally succeeded, through which the illness was successfully pushed back.
Immune System Was Severely Weakened
According to his spokesperson, Neill did not pass away from the consequences of his illness, but from pneumonia. However, the years of intensive treatments had severely strained his body. His former partner, Australian journalist Laura Tingle, also explained that the treatments had considerably weakened his immune system. Neill had been seriously ill in recent weeks and ultimately could not recover from the infection.
Private Memorial Service on His Farm
His spokesperson described Neill as an "extraordinarily private person" who never wanted to make much fuss about himself. Therefore, the memorial service will take place among close family and friends on his farm in New Zealand.
Instead of flowers, the family asks fans to donate to organizations that were particularly close to the actor's heart. These include the Snowdome Foundation, which advocates for better treatment options for blood conditions, as well as environmental and nature conservation organizations in New Zealand.
Until the very end, Sam Neill remained professionally active: Despite his health setbacks, he filmed four movie and television projects last year that are scheduled to be released in the coming months. Numerous colleagues from Hollywood and New Zealand honored him after his death as a warm-hearted, humble, and exceptionally talented actor.
