Udo Lindenberg (80) must continue to take it easy. The musician will not perform at this year's Panikpreis on August 1st at Hirsau Monastery in Calw. The reason is his fragile health: a severe gastritis that has dragged on for weeks continues to trouble him. On medical advice, the singer is now taking the time he needs for his complete recovery. This was announced by Lindenberg's communications agency in a press release.
In May, Lindenberg had to be treated at a Hamburg hospital, and shortly thereafter he canceled several appointments. The gastritis was diagnosed at that time by his family doctor, after the musician had celebrated his 80th birthday on May 17th and subsequently vacationed in Scotland.
'I was so looking forward to it'
Missing the Panikpreis finale clearly bothers the singer. In his statement, he addresses his followers directly: he had been hugely looking forward to the evening and his 'Panik Family,' he is saddened that it won't work out this time. Nevertheless, he wishes everyone a fantastic party and calls on them to strongly support the foundation and the award winners during their performances.
Lindenberg packages the cancellation with his typical wink. 'I promise, as soon as Dr. Schleuderknie bounces across the stage again, we'll see each other again!' he tells his fans. The announcement emphasizes that the decision was anything but easy for him. It was made solely to avoid jeopardizing his health. He is still undergoing treatment.
Emerging artists in the spotlight
The audience won't have to do without stage presence entirely, though. That evening, the three winners of the 2026 Panikpreis will perform together: Katha Rosa, Yale, and Finn Moriz. According to the announcement, the prize has been awarded every two years since 2008, with previous winners including acts like Deine Cousine, Sarah Lesch, and Tyna.
Katha Rosa is especially in the spotlight. Her song 'Schwarzer Hund,' which addresses depression, has already been streamed over 14 million times. For her first place, she receives prize money as well as the Golden Hat.
Prominent guests
The evening has more names in store for Lindenberg fans. Singer Elif, featured on the tribute album 'WE LOVE UDO' with her version of 'Cello,' will contribute an acoustic set. Panikband saxophonist Noah Fischer will provide interludes, and the tribute band 'Der Udonaut und die Paniker' as well as Lindenberg's background singers Nathalie Dorra and Ole Feddersen will also be performing.
The announcement notes that tickets will remain valid. Anyone who wishes to return their tickets anyway will receive a full refund.
