The right last name can open all doors and gates in Hollywood and beyond. This circumstance is often criticized as nepotism, which has helped many a famous offspring secure prestigious roles - and sometimes undeservedly, according to a frequent accusation.
For various reasons, however, celebrities have also deliberately renounced their illustrious family names. Whether it's because they wanted to build their career entirely on their own, didn't identify with it, or instead wanted to honor a different last name.
No Longer Cruise, But Not Holmes Either
One of the most recent examples is Suri (20), the daughter of Tom Cruise (64) and Katie Holmes (47). Until 2024, she bore her famous father's last name. As US media claim to have discovered, however, she changed it to Noelle about two years ago. Even though she consequently didn't adopt the last name of her equally world-famous mother, she honored Katie Holmes with the choice in her own unique way. Because Noelle is the middle name of the "Dawson's Creek" star.
Four of Six Children No Longer Want to Be Called Pitt
The fact that the relationship between former dream couple Brad Pitt (62) and Angelina Jolie (51) is highly strained is evidenced by years of court battles alone. But their shared offspring also seem to be increasingly distancing themselves from their father.
As "People" reports, four of the six children have now officially dropped the last name Pitt: Following Zahara (21), Maddox (24), and Shiloh (20), Vivienne (18) has reportedly also recently made this decision. If this is true, currently only son Pax (22) and Vivienne's twin brother Knox (18) would still carry the double name Jolie-Pitt.
He Made His Own Name in the Dream Factory
Almost since the beginning of his acting career, Nicolas Cage (62) has been known as Nicolas Cage - and he has truly made a name for himself under this pseudonym in the dream factory. Actually, the star went by the even more illustrious Hollywood last name Coppola. At least he did officially until 2025, as the actor revealed to the US site "Variety" in May of this year.
Cage also explained what the final motivation was for him to no longer want to be a Coppola. "It's better to be the patriarch of my own little family than the clown-cousin on the fringes of someone else's family." So he decided to fully commit to the name Cage. He is the son of the late August Coppola, the older brother of legendary director Francis Ford Coppola (87).
A Last Name as a Tribute
Occasionally, there's also a sentimental reason behind the choice of a less well-known last name. In the case of Emilio Estevez (64), the background is particularly interesting. Because unlike his famous father Martin Sheen (85) and brother Charlie Sheen (60), he is the only one who remained true to the actual (and far less known) family name.
Because Martin Sheen's real name is actually Ramon Estevez. However, since he faced discriminatory attacks at the beginning of his career, he eventually changed both his first and last names. Charlie Sheen, actually Carlos Estevez, followed his father's example. Only Emilio Estevez remained true to his last name to honor the family's Hispanic heritage.
In Honor of His Late Mother
A touching yet tragic story also lies behind the name Micheál Richardson. Because he was born Micheál Neeson, son of action hero Liam Neeson (74). About eight years ago, the now 31-year-old changed his last name to Richardson to honor his mother Natasha Richardson, who passed away in 2009. The actress had died at only 45 years old from the consequences of a skiing accident.
