The stars of the Netflix hit "Stranger Things" certainly imagined things would be different before the announcement of the Emmy nominations on Wednesday morning (local time) in Los Angeles. Neither the production itself nor anyone from the cast has been nominated in any of the major categories for an award.
Seven nominations for "Stranger Things" only in minor categories
Even though the grand series finale at the turn of the year was received with mixed feelings by fans, the series was a genuine pop culture phenomenon for many years. Overall, "Stranger Things" does receive seven nominations this year, but all of them only in visual effects or makeup categories and the like, which are relatively less important to the broad mass of series lovers.
In the major categories, "Stranger Things" comes up empty-handed in the nominations. The nostalgic mystery spectacle is not among the nominees for best drama series, nor are Millie Bobby Brown (22), Noah Schnapp (21), Finn Wolfhard (23), Caleb McLaughlin (24), Gaten Matarazzo (23), Sadie Sink (24), or other stars listed in the acting categories.
"The Pitt" and "Hacks" are major favorites
Clear favorites to potentially sweep a whole series of awards at the 78th Emmys in September are likely to be the series "The Pitt" and "Hacks" above all. The hospital drama "The Pitt" is nominated most frequently of all series with 25 nominations, while the dramedy "Hacks" sets a new record in the comedy category with 24 nominations. Never before have there been so many nominations for a comedy production in a single year.
For comparison: While no "Stranger Things" star is nominated, seven actors alone are nominated as best supporting actress or best supporting actor in a drama series from "The Pitt". This means half of all the people nominated in these two categories come from the hospital series.
Other series that can probably count on good chances for one of the awards include "Widow's Bay" and "Pluribus". The two series are nominated 19 times and 18 times, respectively. 16 nominations go to "Beef", another 13 to "DTF St. Louis", and eleven to "Saturday Night Live" as well as "Spider-Noir".
Voting on the winners will take place between August 17 and August 26. In the major categories, the Emmys will be presented on September 14 at the 78th edition of the gala. Actress Mariska Hargitay (62), known among other things from the series "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit", will host the evening.
