Where other superheroes have failed in recent years, Spider-Man is there to save the day. While some superhero films have underperformed, Tom Holland's (30) and Zendaya's (29) new adventure is already breaking a record right from its launch in the US and Canada.
In the North American movie market, "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has absolutely pulverized a previous record with its initial screenings. Never before has a film brought in so much money at the box office there from previews before the wide, official release. As the trade publications "Variety" and "The Hollywood Reporter" both report, these previews brought in a total of 72 million US dollars according to early figures. The previous record was held by another superhero blockbuster: "Avengers: Endgame" took in 60 million dollars.
What happens over the weekend?
For Sony Pictures, this is an excellent starting position, because "Avengers: Endgame" was subsequently able to set a North American record of around 357 million US dollars during its opening weekend in 2019. Sony is likely hoping that with this starting point, the rather conservative in-house expectation of revenues of 190 million to 195 million dollars for the first weekend according to "Variety" will be exceeded. There are also estimates suggesting over 300 million dollars for the new "Spider-Man" film.
"Brand New Day" is Tom Holland's fourth solo adventure as Spider-Man/Peter Parker. By his side are Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon (29) as Ned, among others. The cast also includes Sadie Sink (24), Jon Bernthal (49), Tramell Tillman (41), Michael Mando (45), and Mark Ruffalo (58). Destin Daniel Cretton (47) directed.
"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has also already been released in Germany. The theatrical release was on July 29, 2026.
