Sam Smith (34) has personally put an end to the engagement rumors that have been circulating for weeks. In an interview with the "New York Times", the British music star confirmed being engaged to fashion designer Christian Cowan (32).
How the proposal went down, who proposed, and when it happened remain open questions. The couple has also remained silent about a possible wedding date.
The non-binary pop star was also clear on another topic in the conversation: Smith refuses to let hostility and social tensions take away their own way of loving. Singing queer love songs feels particularly special to Smith right now.
The confirmation doesn't come as a complete surprise. In early May, American tabloid media had already reported, citing insiders, that Smith and Cowan had long been engaged.
Before their joint appearance at the Met Gala, the two were reportedly overheard at New York's Mark Hotel talking about the engagement. On the red carpet, a large, square diamond ring by Cartier caught everyone's attention.
Outfit as Declaration of Love
Cowan designed the evening's coordinated outfits himself. The artist and fashion illustrator Erté served as inspiration, with a total of 255,000 crystals and pearls incorporated. The handwork alone reportedly took around 2,000 hours. Cowan subsequently described the designs as a declaration of love to Smith and to the art of fashion.
Smith and Cowan were first seen together publicly in December 2022, of all places at the White House. The occasion was the signing of the U.S. law protecting same-gender marriages, where the two posed with then-President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden, among others. More joint appearances followed, but the couple didn't officially confirm their relationship until May 2024.
