On August 4, Pierce Brosnan (73) has a date marked on his calendar that is almost a rarity in Hollywood: He will have been married to Keely Shaye (62) for 25 years. The couple tied the knot in 2001 at Ballintubber Abbey in Ireland's County Mayo, with the celebration following at Ashford Castle. The actor and the journalist had met seven years earlier.
What's remarkable about this track record is less the number than what hasn't happened in all those years: no crisis reports, no scandal, no drama. Not even a single serious breakup rumor has ever made it into the gossip columns, even though Brosnan, as a former James Bond actor, has been one of the most-watched men in the film business for decades.
Sweet Declarations of Love
Instead, there has been plenty of public affection. For their 23rd wedding anniversary, for example, Brosnan posted a collage on Instagram of old and new photos and addressed "my dearest Keely, my beautiful brown-eyed girl, my north, my south, my east and west. All my love, should I fall behind, wait for me."
His wife responded just as lovingly at the time. "You are the finest, loveliest, tenderest person I have ever known", she declared alongside wedding photos. "Here's to the next 23 years together. May they continue to be creative, adventurous, loving, inspiring and joyful. Time flies on love's wings." Brosnan also wears this phrase in its original English engraved on a watch his wife gave him.
A Fateful Encounter
This great love began on April 8, 1994, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Keely Shaye was there for work, assigned as a television correspondent to interview Cheers star Ted Danson. At a party, she ran into Brosnan instead. "He was captivating. Tall, dark and handsome, everything that everybody would immediately be attracted to", she recalled in 2001 in an interview with People. "He had this mischievous sparkle in his eyes. I thought, 'Wow! Wow!'"
A few days later came the first date: "We sat under the stars and he held my hand. There were fireworks going off overhead." The following year, the Bond star and his real-life Bond girl made their first public appearance together on the red carpet at a London premiere. In January 1997, their son Dylan was born, followed by their second son Paris in February 2001, half a year before the wedding.
Happiness After Tragedy
Pierce Brosnan had been through a dark period before this, however. In December 1991, his first wife, Australian actress Cassandra Harris, died of ovarian cancer at age 43. The marriage produced son Sean (42), and Brosnan also adopted her children Charlotte and Christopher (53). Charlotte died in 2013 at age 41 from the same disease.
His second wife helped carry him through this period, the Hollywood star told the Mail on Sunday in 2013. "Keely has always been kind and compassionate and encouraged me to mourn Cassie", Brosnan said at the time. "I suppose Keely is my North Star, always looking out for me."
It's Always About Solving Problems
In June 2025, he told Fox News Digital: "Marriage is always about solving problems. You just solve one problem after another, whether it's the washing machine or how far the finances stretch or what your own dreams are." His wife has given him "wings to fly around the world and make films".
How much Keely Shaye supports her partner becomes evident at public appearances as well. Last year, for instance, they appeared together at the premiere of the stage adaptation of Good Night, and Good Luck on Broadway, and shortly before that at the premiere of Brosnan's series MobLand.
Away from these appearances, the couple has lived entirely on the Hawaiian island of Kauai since 2020, where they tend to their garden and Brosnan pursues his second passion, painting. Most important to both of them is simply being able to spend time together. "Keely and I love each other and are grateful to have each other as life partners. Through hard work and perseverance, we have built a good life for ourselves", Pierce Brosnan reflected last year.
