It's a first in more than ten years of "Hot Ones": Tom Holland (30) threw up on camera on the YouTube cult show. The "Spider-Man" actor appeared on July 23 alongside his colleague Jon Bernthal (49) and worked his way through the increasingly spicy marinated chicken wings that are part of the show's concept.
Holland had still made it through the nearly half-hour Q&A with host Sean Evans (40). Only afterwards, while posing for photos together, did the spiciness catch up with him. The actor tried to smile, began coughing instead, and bent over behind the table where he threw up.
Excitement in the Room
Holland himself reacted with laughter. Bernthal grabbed him by the shoulders, encouraged him with a loud "Let's go!" and asked him to take a photo of the moment. "You can use this", Holland called out to the producers afterwards, laughing. When asked, the host explained it was probably the first time a guest had thrown up on set. Holland: "I love being the first."
The mishap had already been foreshadowed during the conversation. In the middle of the interview, Holland admitted he felt like he might "pass out". A glass of milk only brought temporary relief. "It's amazing how much the milk helps, and then it immediately comes right back", he said. After a short breather, he declared himself "fully back".
Memorable "Umbrella" Moment
Holland has experience with memorable show appearances anyway. His performance on the show "Lip Sync Battle" began harmlessly in 2017 with a classic swing to "Singin' in the Rain", before the actor returned to the stage in a tight corset, fishnet stockings, and a black wig to perform Rihanna's global hit "Umbrella".
The performance was far from just a gag: Holland delivered a technically precise dance choreography with water effects and acrobatics, where the timing of every movement was perfect. His roots as a musical theater performer, including in "Billy Elliot", were unmistakable.
The performance swept aside traditional gender roles, became a viral hit, and is still considered one of the most iconic moments in recent pop culture.
